Custom Quality Set of 6 French Louis XVI Style Paint Frame Leather Dining Chairs – Ebay

This picture below by Elle Decoration goes to show how stunning French Provincial Furniture can look in a rustic setting. Here we have a French Provincial sofa upholstered in a brown or camel leather, which happens to be a perfect match against the herringbone wood floors. Adding to this look a person could consider purchasing some natural wool blankets in gray, and anything distressed would look terrific.  Brass would also complement a rustic decorating look quite well.

-In this photo by Restoration Hardware we see a terrific combination of brown leather and raw wood.

The Most Sought After Louis XV Cabinet Makers Of Eighteenth Century

Picture Credit Helen McCoy– This commode has the most beautiful bronze pulls and escutcheons. America’s International Fine Art and Antiques Fair, West Palm Beach, FL, 2007  Provenance  Grenoble, France

Jean-Francois Hache (January 10. 1730 – August 19. 1796)  was a member of a famous dynasty of 18th century cabinetmakers that included his grandfather, Thomas, and his father, Pierre. The Hache family played a major role in France for over a century.

Jean-François Hache (1730-1796) is probably the most famous of the Hache craftsmen. In 1756 Jean-Francois made a four-month stay in Paris, where he was very much influenced by the Louis XV style and particularly by the work of Jean-François Oeben.

Jean-Francois was also known for his mosaic inlays, and bold and unusual geometric inlaid forms.  Throughout the eighteenth century the workshops of the family Axe were recognized as the most talented craftsmen, cabinet makers in the region, working exclusively for larger families.  Today, the pieces of furniture  made by the Hache family are in high demand.

Looking For Ideas For Yellow Painted Furniture? -You Need To See This Piece!

Spring and Summer is just around the corner, and many people are looking to re-work their existing furniture.  More people are being drawn to implementing lighter colors in their home, especially when it comes to painted furniture.  Yellow is a really terrific color choice, and there are so many ways you can dress up a piece of furniture if you plan on painting it yellow.

The key to French Provence decorating is to start with good boned furniture.  If you have the lines and the shape of the Louis XV styles, you can do wonders with paint and furniture appliques.

This chest featured at Christies is one of the prettiest, if not the best piece of furniture painted in yellow I have seen.  The color combinations that are employed on this chest are sensational.  Butter yellow, and light gray paint used to highlight the details of the console table and work beautifully together.

In some areas around the flowers, it appears to be that the appliques are whiter than others which gives the appliques a 3 dimentional apperance.  This pieces appears to have some natural distressing around the painted areas adding depth to the overall look.  Painting the top of the table brings the eye to differentiate the apron of the table and the table top.

One of the best features of this table are the flower and swag furniture appliques.  There are many wood furniture appliques on the market today which feature historical designs which you can hammer on to your furniture.

I have written several articles on this subject.

-My Hand Painted Burl Wood Chest With Hand Made Appliques

Look at the handles on this chest.  You can add extra detail to your handles as well using molds

Wreaths – Not A Mold, but an applique. $5.95

Laurel Leaves Mounts– Gold Plated Metal $36.

Mini Flower Plaque– Possibly could be used as a furniture applique.

In this article, Create A Mind-Blowing Feature Wall For Just Pennies Using Plaster Molds I explain the difference between push molds and plaster molds.  Both techniques are thrilling, and I promise you, that you will love molding after trying it just once.

This is a great little piece that could be used on furniture. $12.

Push molds are certainly the way to go to create floral appliques if you want to create a look like the French Provincial console from Christies.

Flower Flexible Push Mold For Resin Or Clay $3.95

-Beautiful Large Scale Swag $22

French Bow Mold– Perfect For Many Projects $3.25

Little Holly Leaves– This has a lot of potential $3.25

Fancy Leaf Embellishment Mold – $3.75

Lilly of The Valley Mold- $3.50

Rose Floral Appliques– Perfect for adding some extra detail around handles.

Double Leaves– $2.25 Perfect For Furniture.

Cluster of Leaves– This could be used as a ornament for French legs.  Often times they are seen hammered on to the top of the legs.  Use two of these upside down, or just one.

French Provincial Painted Diminutive Armoire from Christies $1,500

Bouquet Furniture Applique Mount – Do It Yourself Chic $30

Gold Ormolu is another outlet for furniture appliques.  If you are wanting more of a genuine historical look, Ari’s Ormolu will have all those high-end furniture appliques.

Do it Yourself Chic also has a number of wonderful furniture appliques including the French styled swags you see on much of the antique French furniture.

Pediment Mold– Could be used on furniture.  Cast only the detail of the mold, not the backing.  From Go Statue.

French Provincial Tables

Powell Furniture makes a stunning mahogany game table in a sophisticated style that would look stunning in any living room. Forget about the tv, and get some quality time in with the family with this game table.

The table features Okume mahogany veneers with lovely hand carved cabriole legs and skirts. The game top flips which allows you to either play chess or checkers or backgammon.

The table includes game pieces for chess, checkers, and backgammon and a shaker cup and dice.  The table includes 2 drawers for storage of game pieces and comfortably seats four.

Leg assembly is required on this table.  Over the years of painting tables I have only come across one table which the legs were permanently attached.  Having the legs come off allows you to get the table into any room with ease.

The only complaint I have seen with this table is the paint finish can be chipped easily. J. Welter left a comment that it was scratched within a week of purchasing the table.  Perhaps the finish is painted, instead of stained.

You may want to put a coat of polyurethane on the table so the finish isn’t ruined over time.  You can buy polyurethane in a spray which produces an incredible finish than painting on the sealant with a brush.

Spray small coats one at a time after each coat dries, and your table will not chip.

  • William Alexander –Powell Mahogany Game Table with Game Pieces – This table, assembled, is both quite large and quite lovely. Assembly could not be easier, using only one set of provided screws and plastic washers. One washer was missing from the bag, but they are easily available for pennies from any hardware store, so that was not an issue for me at all. But, this table will come in a very large and well-packaged box. The box will not fit into a standard car for disposal, so be aware that you will need to chop the box up for a trash can or hauling off unless you have a very large automobile or truck. There is no drawer assembly, which is very welcome. The table itself is large and quite heavy, so moving it is not a “one man job.” You will need to move it to the place where you want it and assemble it there and save yourself some back trauma.  The other little quibble I have is that the game board was not a 100 percent perfect “fit” for the recessed square in the top of the table, meaning mine fit in very, very snugly. It will not be easy to remove and “flip” to the backgammon side if I will be able to remove it at all. You also get a set of backgammon counters, a dice cup with dice (but no doubling cube), and a set of standard chess pieces in black and clear plastic. Nice to have, to be sure, but I have a set of non-plastic wooden chessmen that look MUCH better on this table than the plastic pieces. Also, some kind of “special” deluxe chess set or backgammon set of size would also better accent the look of this piece.  The result? A truly beautiful table that adds to a more traditional room decorated in shades of cream, light brown, burgundies/reds, some shade of soft gold, or off-white. It is indeed a stately piece of furniture, and not for the kids to play on, to be sure. I also notice that the promo picture shows full glasses on it. I think that would be a very, very bad idea without coasters.  So, minor details aside, I love this table and I am looking forward to having it in my home for many years.

Reproduction French 18th Century Chests

This chest is an antique reproduction of a chest originating from the countryside of Southern France typical of those seen in the 18th century. This fabulous chest is made from solid pine wood and wrought iron, and features a beautiful aged patina.

The process that Laurel Crown goes through is they layer their paint, and then scrape it and then sand it down by hand.

Charles Faudree is known as a French Country Designer, and features a lot of solid wood 18th century style chests in his French Country Living book.

In his book he details the Nomadic lifestyle and features many pictures with authentic looking rooms that could give you some ideas of how to decorate with this style of chest.

This French Country chest of drawers is a charming and is a provincial addition to a home which is designed around french furniture.  The dresser consists of four solid pine drawers, wrought iron handles make this chest of drawers both beautiful and practical.

The chest is made from pine, and weathered,so you are guaranteed a realistic looking antique chest to complement your home.  Only a few companies have made reproductions of these french looking primitive chests that having one in your home would certainly speak volumes.

Laurel Crown is known for their reproduction furniture and meticulous craftsmanship.  Their time tested techniques for creating detailed rich painted finishes saves you time painting, and lets face it, most of us are not professional faux artists!  The chest has an antique off-white patina which will enable you to match it up with your existing furniture.

Both Pictures taken from Charles Faudree French Style, And Antique Style Dressers

Charles Faudree’s French Country Signature has made a handsome living by bringing a bit of the French to the Midwest. Famed for his Parisian buying trips, where he negotiates with flea market vendors using a pen and paper, Faudree confides “a signature piece doesn’t have to be expensive.

The look the designer refers to is typified by floor-sweeping silk draperies and overstuffed chairs upholstered in merrily patterned fabrics long on luxury.

Faudree’s obsession with textiles is evident on every page, and far from simply focusing on predictable pastoral-themed toile to recreate the charm of French country cottages, his experiments with dragon-fly prints, check patterns and rich golden embellishments have formed his signature style.

A testament to the author’s knack for gilt-edged comfort (including the liberal use of painted furniture, ornate mirrors and pottery displays), this book, and Faudree as an unpretentious guide, will please readers looking to spruce up their homes.

French Louis XV Style Cabinets

This 19th Century Louis XV Style Buffet Sold By Petricia Thompson Antiques is a excellent example of a painted french cabinet.

If you look closely at this buffet, you can see two tones of paint.  The main color is in a gray toned paint color with undertones of green, and the carved details appear to be painted in a creamy white.

The color is subtle but gives a very rich appearance to this cabinet.
