French Provence Paint Colors In Yellow

Anne Fowler's stunning French styled home

GAP interiors featured Anne Fowler’s stunning French styled home  who, after five years living in Gers, which is located in the Midi Pyrenees region of France moved back home to Cotswolds UK.  Her partner, Alan Lloyd and herself restored a three-storey Cotswold stone building into the home of their dreams.  The home which had formerly been a stationery shop became their own oasis.

In one of the bedr00ms sits a painted antique french armoire in a brilliant yellow.  Yellow is one of the most popular historical colors that are seen in classic French countryside decorating.  All Provencal looks are inspired by the landscape of France, so when you think of decorating;…. think of the middle of summer, and you will always hit the mark.

The people at the time, and still today are captivated by the French countryside, and so much that they want to bring the outdoors inside.  Saturated colors such as green, blue, purples and yellow and golds are of Provence taste. Yellow sunflowers, and massive fields of yellow colza flowers are seen in Toulouse, in the south of France must have been what sparked the taste in the yellow paint colors we see all over Provence.

Ochre was a popular coloring in France during the time of the French Empire, and many French citizens living in foreign colonies would import a great deal of ochre clay from France to make their new lands feel like home.  Today the color of yellow is still one of the most popular colors to decorate with, along side blue, purple and green.

Lighter Muted Yellows With Pastel Blue Shutters and Brighter Deep Blue Colors Found in the Awning- Corey Amaro’s Blog

How To Decorate With Yellow:

1.  Use Muted Yellows with A Combination of Blues.

Corey Amaro took pictures around Provence, (which she lives) and found many shades of blue and yellow.  In this photograph above we find a muted yellow as the base color, with light colored pastel blue shutters and brighter deeper saturated blue found in the awning.

Use a lighter muted yellow on your walls.  Choose a dulled down yellow and accent it with mustard yellow.  Rusty brown can be used in your hardware, potting containers,  and old world rusted out lamps.  Use a rusty old urn and feature moss green toned plants for a very old world appearance.

Textured walls with textured plaster often found at your local hardware store will give you the presence of a stone and plaster appearance often seen in France.

Add in the light blue color with your painted furniture, or upholstery.  Using the color scheme of the the muted yellow as your base, you can then focus on bringing the the array of muted blues into your home.  Base your entire living room set around the lighter shades of blue and perhaps add in a few throw pillows in the brighter saturated ocean blues will give a nice balance to your home.  Following the scheme of these three color tones will give a beautiful French Provence look to your home.

The Parma Chest features a signature acorn with fleur de Lis motif.  The overall design features a ochre yellow with woodlands red fleur de Lis motif finished on a four drawer parma chest.  The chest also features pendant hardware and measures 33″H x 18″D x 36″W.  This chest gives all the looks of classic Provence painted furniture.  Guild Master sells it for $1,167

1.  Use Brighter Toned Yellows with Muted Blue Accent Colors.

Again in this photograph we see the same color scheme but reversed.  Brighter tones of saturated yellows are paired with muted blues.  Paint the walls a bright yellow, and add in lighter blue painted french furniture.  In this scheme paint colors include light and bright blues, muted greens, true reds and yellows and soft shades of these colors.

Provence Furniture is often left in its natural state, or painted for a country feel.  Provence styled upholstered chairs featured linens and natural comfortable fabrics that you could put your feet up in. Farmhouse tables were functional for preparing dinners and had smooth tops from the years of use.  Dining chairs were designed to be beautiful yet functional. Homes had a distressed appearance showing good times over the years.

Provence style is an upscale romantic version of relaxed country living. Furniture is comfortable, and interiors are not stuffy and formal, but relaxed and casual. Furniture that was seen in Versailles was duplicated for the country but in relaxed fabrics.

Collecting Louis XV styled furniture will go a long way to create this look for your home. Seating should be soft and comfortable. While many people opt for plain linen fabrics others invest in the classic floral patterns found in traditional France.

Tolix Chairs: The French Metal Chair Everyone Wants This Year!

Tolix Chairs From Decoracion Facilisimo

Tolix Chairs From Decoracion Facilisimo

Tolix chairs have been tremendously popular this last year, and in fact have been for the last several years.  The chair itself has never really gone out of style.  These chairs have been seen painted white, black, red, rusted out, and painted in bright vibrant paint colors.

The tolix chair was designed by a Frenchman in 1907, by the name of Xavier Pauchard.  His very first chair looked remarkably similar to those chairs we see all over the magazines today.  Pauchard used galvanization which is a process of applying a protective zinc coating to steel or iron, in order to prevent rusting.  The most common method in current use is hot-dip galvanization, in which steel parts are submerged in a bath of molten zinc.  Galvanizing is also favored as a means of protective coating because of its low cost, ease of application and comparatively long maintenance-free service life.

The tolix chairs are being re-produced by the top furniture companies and are being featured in almost every design magazine world wide.  They are being photographed both indoors and outdoors, and being used as a regular dining chair, and doubled as a patio chair.

Almost Like the Classic Tolix Chair, This French Bistro Chair is only $129!

French Provincial Sofa’s and Settees

French Settee

Achieving the authentic feel of a period-styled room is usually accomplished by staging the right period furniture. With authentic or reproduction pieces your room can be transformed to a French cottage or a luxurious French chateau.

Upholstery is usually the easiest ways of creating the mood in the room, and does push the envelope from a decorated room to a professionally designed room.

French sofas are generally something you can find easily since many reproductions were made in the 1960’s. There are so many designs, so pick one you absolutely love.

French provincial sofas from the 1960’s often featured satin fabrics, and a mix of baroque fabric, which are generally out of date, which means you will have to factor in upholstery costs.

Your fabric alone can make your room signal an antique feel, or formal style, or relaxed family home, so your fabric consideration is very important when you want to make a statement.

When considering fabric, limit your selections to upholstery fabric than curtain fabrics and so forth. Upholstering a chair or a couch alone can be a large job all on its own if you are doing it by yourself, and can be pretty costly, so be sure to pick a fabric that lasts long, and wears slowly over time.

Natural fabrics are the way to go. Velvets, and heavier fabrics will age well with the slight coffee spills over time.

French Settees can be the easiest to upholster because often they have a back and a seat and no complications compared to the modern sofas.

Some of the prettiest settees are found with the cane backs which can be left alone, or sprayed gold, or painted white or cream and antiqued with brown glaze.

A settee is a couch that is a double or triple seater bench with a wooden back and wooden arms. Along with sofas, accent chairs are often underestimated, but can do wonders in creating a well designed room.

French Patio

There is nothing like finding old style French Provence furniture to decorate your patio with.  Old style french furniture often contained both iron and wood.

Folding furniture has been around for centuries.  In fact, Egyptian furniture included folding stools and couches.

Campaign furniture was originally designed for the British army in the late 1700’s which could be taken with them on the battle front.

The furniture was easy to fold up, broken down and set back up in an instant.  Folding furniture is perfect for any home because this style of furniture can be stored easily.  Many people face the situation that their iron furniture cannot be easily stored in their garage, and often times what happens is the iron is left out to face the harsh weather through the winter time.

Fold-able patio furniture makes sense.  Many people choose this type of furniture in apartment buildings with balconies because the furniture can be folded up if they want the floor space to work on a project.

The folding patio furniture has also been photographed inside homes instead of outside on the patio.  As more people are falling in love with primitive decorating, such as stone walls, rustic limed wood flooring, and distressed paint finishes, many people are turning to these rustic pieces to finish off their old world looks inside their homes.

Slatted cafe tables and chairs have been typically left in its natural state, although they can be painted to match your coordinating furniture.  Wood and iron have been the number one choice when it comes to patio furniture.

French Provincial Tables

Powell Furniture makes a stunning mahogany game table in a sophisticated style that would look stunning in any living room. Forget about the tv, and get some quality time in with the family with this game table.

The table features Okume mahogany veneers with lovely hand carved cabriole legs and skirts. The game top flips which allows you to either play chess or checkers or backgammon.

The table includes game pieces for chess, checkers, and backgammon and a shaker cup and dice.  The table includes 2 drawers for storage of game pieces and comfortably seats four.

Leg assembly is required on this table.  Over the years of painting tables I have only come across one table which the legs were permanently attached.  Having the legs come off allows you to get the table into any room with ease.

The only complaint I have seen with this table is the paint finish can be chipped easily. J. Welter left a comment that it was scratched within a week of purchasing the table.  Perhaps the finish is painted, instead of stained.

You may want to put a coat of polyurethane on the table so the finish isn’t ruined over time.  You can buy polyurethane in a spray which produces an incredible finish than painting on the sealant with a brush.

Spray small coats one at a time after each coat dries, and your table will not chip.

  • William Alexander –Powell Mahogany Game Table with Game Pieces – This table, assembled, is both quite large and quite lovely. Assembly could not be easier, using only one set of provided screws and plastic washers. One washer was missing from the bag, but they are easily available for pennies from any hardware store, so that was not an issue for me at all. But, this table will come in a very large and well-packaged box. The box will not fit into a standard car for disposal, so be aware that you will need to chop the box up for a trash can or hauling off unless you have a very large automobile or truck. There is no drawer assembly, which is very welcome. The table itself is large and quite heavy, so moving it is not a “one man job.” You will need to move it to the place where you want it and assemble it there and save yourself some back trauma.  The other little quibble I have is that the game board was not a 100 percent perfect “fit” for the recessed square in the top of the table, meaning mine fit in very, very snugly. It will not be easy to remove and “flip” to the backgammon side if I will be able to remove it at all. You also get a set of backgammon counters, a dice cup with dice (but no doubling cube), and a set of standard chess pieces in black and clear plastic. Nice to have, to be sure, but I have a set of non-plastic wooden chessmen that look MUCH better on this table than the plastic pieces. Also, some kind of “special” deluxe chess set or backgammon set of size would also better accent the look of this piece.  The result? A truly beautiful table that adds to a more traditional room decorated in shades of cream, light brown, burgundies/reds, some shade of soft gold, or off-white. It is indeed a stately piece of furniture, and not for the kids to play on, to be sure. I also notice that the promo picture shows full glasses on it. I think that would be a very, very bad idea without coasters.  So, minor details aside, I love this table and I am looking forward to having it in my home for many years.

Exceptional French Provence Reproduction Furniture

For more than 40 years interior designers throughout the United States and Canada,  Sarreid Ltd has been known as being an innovator in the home furnishings field since 1967. After receiving many requests from customers to provide them with identical pieces of the best selling items, Sarreid Ltd finally decided to manufacture the best of their furnishings that could be then made available to the public on a wider scale.

Their goal was to make exact replicas of the original antique that they had in their possession, so they could produce quality pieces that look identical to the originals. Every item could be made using the original techniques seen on the pieces themselves by skilled craftsmen who restore Sarreid’s genuine antiques. Their reproductions look like thousand dollar 18th century antique furniture.  This is partly due to the amazing skills of their craftsmen, (whom they recruit from all over the world), but also the steps they take to make the furniture look genuine.  They start with reclaimed wood, and every item is hand finished by their  team of antique restorers, replicating the finish of the original antique in every detail. The end result is that each replica is unique in its own way, just like the original. Expansion, shrinkage, small cracks, and wood imperfections are all inherent qualities of their product.

Sarreid sells exclusively to fine furniture stores and design galleries.

The Most Sought After Louis XV Cabinet Makers Of Eighteenth Century

Jean-Francois Hache (January 10. 1730 – August 19. 1796)  was a member of a famous dynasty of 18th century cabinetmakers that included his grandfather, Thomas, and his father, Pierre. The Hache family played a major role in France for over a century.

Jean-François Hache (1730-1796) is probably the most famous of the Hache craftsmen. In 1756 Jean-Francois made a four-month stay in Paris, where he was very much influenced by the Louis XV style and particularly by the work of Jean-François Oeben.

Jean-Francois was also known for his mosaic inlays, and bold and unusual geometric inlaid forms.  Throughout the eighteenth century the workshops of the family Axe were recognized as the most talented craftsmen, cabinet makers in the region, working exclusively for larger families.  Today, the pieces of furniture  made by the Hache family are in high demand.
