French Provincial Bleached Tall Dresser By Shabby Roots Boutique

This dresser was listed in the SF Bay Craigslist.

From the listing:

Modern farmhouse bleached wood tall dresser French chest of drawers$1,095 (vallejo / benicia)

Gorgeous natural raw bleached wood tall dresser. This antique French provincial chest of drawers is where rustic meets chic. This piece took me a solid week from start to finish and I’m so thrilled with the way it turned out. This piece was sanded down to bare wood (some of the old finish was left in cracks and crevices on purpose to make it more interesting) the wood was then bleached, and bleached again, and again- white washed, and sealed with some dark wax and white wax for a perfect buttery smooth to the touch matte finish.

This piece is solid wood and features 6 smooth dovetail drawers, stunning wood grain, beautiful curves, moulding and feet, and those striking French hardware pulls with a bronze patina set this piece off perfectly. This piece is truly a one of a kind and won’t last long.

Aged Silver Patina Painted Vintage Bassett French Provincial Dresser

Featured from Craigslist – NY Craigslist

You are viewing a stunning mid century French provincial chest of drawers, manufactured in the 1950’s to 1960’s by Bassett Furniture. The piece was in excellent condition prior to being refurbished. It was completely stripped (not just sanded) of its “Golden Bisque” paint, and given a makeover in a beautiful aged metallic silver patina with a satin clear coat. The 4 large drawers were embellished with a dimensional stencil design. All 6 drawers have also been painted on the inside and lined in an exquisite black and reflective metallic silver fabric lining. Hardware was refinished in a gloss black.

The furniture is made of solid wood, with no particle board or plastic pieces. The original Bassett brass seal is in the top left drawer, which was their guarantee of quality back in the day. And it truly is a quality piece of furniture that was made to last for generations. It is made of choice pieces of solid wood with quality dove tail constructed drawers and strong, solid hardware. They don’t make furniture like this anymore.

Update Your Country Furniture With Antique Looking Bin Pulls

Vintage Drawer Knobs Pulls 15pcs/lotAmazon $9

We have all seen those country styled pieces second hand that have nice clean lines, often without legs paired up with vintage chippendale pulls.

This style pairs up with French Provincial perfectly.  The classic looking lines make it a great piece for an old world interior.

If you are looking for a fool proof way to update this style of vintage furniture, look to bin pulls.  It will instantly make that vintage piece look expensive.

Another way to completely transform the dressers is to bolt two dressers together.  One on top of another.  Stacking them by securing them with heavier screws inside the chest may give you a very unique appearance of an old tall library cabinet.  These pieces are so common that the chances of finding more than one is in your favor.  Simply paint them, and then screw them together, and anchor the piece into the stud on the wall.

Mary Taylor Smith‎- It’s one of the few times my husband has wanted to keep something I painted to sell (he thinks we have too much furniture as it is). I love them too, but mama needs to pay for a cruise, so into the shoppe they go!

A 1950’s Touraine Drexel Chalk Paint Dresser Reveal

This piece is from the Touraine Custom Collection by Drexel (circa 1950’s to 1960’s). To date, she’s my favorite yard sale find and I was glad to finally work on her. I was really excited to buy another color of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint too. French Linen was the color I chose to go with.

I painted the shell of the dresser in French Linen. For the drawers, I did a mixture of French Linen and some Old White. Here (sorry, I did not measure when I mixed the two clolors together). Here’s how she turned out…

Vintage French Provincial Highboy Silver Metal Makeover

This dresser just made its way to its new home last night to the same owner of the Audrey media center.  This dresser just made its way to its new home last night to the same owner of the Audrey media center. She had requested this provincial style dresser in a tall boy so I leapt at the chance when I found one for sale to get to work on her project. She also wanted it to be lovely silver to tie in with the other art pieces and mirrored pieces in her living space.

I used glidden gripper primer and had the lady at home depot make it into “gripper grey”. They discontinued the grey primer but can still make it out of the white one. 2 coats of primer and then 2+ coats of Martha stewart metallic specialty paint (found in the paint section of home depot usa, not sure about canada).  This dresser was covered with 1 little jar. I was actually surprised how well it spread.

How To Build Your Own Farmhouse Table

Gather Farmhouse Table Equipment and Tools

You need four wood boards that are 2 by 12 by 16 inches in size, one wood board that’s 2 by 4 by 56 inches, and one that’s 2 by 12 by 60 inches. The tools and supplies required for this project include a box of 3-inch wood screws with flush trim, wood plugs, wood glue, measuring tape, a screw gun, and multiple fine-grit sanding blocks.

Search for cedar wood or pine when buying lumber for your farmhouse table. These woods are aesthetically appealing, durable enough to withstand years of use, easy to work with, and widely available.

Attach the Legs to the Table Surface

The four 2-inch by 12-inch by 16-inch boards make up the legs of your table. Stand the legs upright on a flat work surface, and grab your measuring tape. Separate two pairs of legs by 56 inches, and make sure the leg pairs are parallel to each other.

Next, place the 2-inch by 12-inch by 60-inch board directly on top of the legs. This piece is the table surface. Make sure the ends of the surface are flush with the top of the table legs. Use a screw gun to carefully drill four flush-trim 3-inch wooden screws through the surface of the table and straight into the end of each leg. Make sure the legs are secure and not wobbly.

How To Restore Faded Leather Furniture – Kimberly Satorre’s Russet Leather Couch Makeover

Have you ever come across a leather couch that has been faded, yet still appears in excellent condition?  Kimberly Satorre posted some pictures of a couch that was apparently free because the color was faded and worn out.   She says restoring leather is an easier process than most people imagine.  You can do it too!

Kimberly Satorre–  “Before and after real leather couch refinish,  free for removing  First photos were before shots and the last were after layers of dye and refinishing. Carmel color leather stain and sealed. I used Fiebing’s russet color…It turned out beautiful”

Here is what it looked like after she restored it.

  • I used Fiebing’s Russet color”
  • ” The key to redying would be to wet the surface first “

Kimberly Satorre It is best to color it close the same color I think . Get some dye and simply clean the leather with soap and water and then on the under side test an area by taking a really wet rag wipe an area and while it is wet.  Apply the dye with a dust free cloth.  I use circular motion and it will appear darker until it dries and if you like that color won’t be while thing. Once u let it sit for about 72 hours apply the sealer.

She mentions that Fiebings sells both dye’s and sealants.  She comments on the thread that the plastic container is what she used for the sealant.

Does It Cover Cat Scratches One Reader Asks:

Kimberly Satorre it does cover scratches. I am not positive but I was told that real leather doesn’t leave scratch makes as it is really hard to tear. but I used the die on a pleather couch with cat scratches and it covered them but the scratches were still there.

Another reader asks ” Does the dye ever come off onto your clothing after sitting on the couch after dying? I have a stained and soiled leather sofa in a condo in Fla. I may want to dye. It’s a rental unit too!”

Kimberly Satorre If  you are wet it may…., just as if from the factory though.

Renee Seeling I used to use Fiebings on my saddle leather. Kept it pliable, clean and did not rub off no matter how much riding I did.

Anna Fiechter who lives in Saugerties, NY took a plain sidetable, and transformed it into something spectacular.  I believe her style is inspired by the shape of furniture that you would see during the French Renaissance.

Question: Do You Keep The Original Hardware On Vintage French Furniture?

French Provincial Dresser by John Witticomb By Ebay Seller htala

Nat Black  Do you typically leave the French provincial handles on your finished piece or do you try to change them for a more modern look?

Julia Harrison‘s French Piece In White (Here’s one where I kept them.)

  • Julia Harrison I usually keep, but I think changing them can be pretty too. Here’s one where I kept them.

Julia Harrison‘s French Piece Where She Changed The Handles

Marnie Owens‘s French Chest.

It is a base coat of cream (home made chalk paint using plaster of paris, but very close in color to Annie Sloan Old White) with the cream, Annie Sloan French Linen and Paris Grey over the top. I just kind of blended the colors together as I was painting to give it more variation. I then sanded to distress some areas and waxed it with Annie Sloan clear wax.

Joanna Torija– I just got this awesome dining set – table and 6 chairs. I have decided to painted in French Linen ASCP.  See the before and after.  Follow Joanna at Jarful House

Jennifer Legreca Motley‘s Table Makeover

Dianne Banks– I decided to give my pine waxed dresser a facelift. The bottom took ages trying to get rid of wax and then a lot of orange bleeding through the chalk paint. So I thought I would put a primer on the top section and then chalk paint it. One quick coat of primer and this is the result.

I changed the vernacular from English to French because someone told me I couldn’t. lol. I changed all the hardware and added escutcheons. I also filled in the shell detail with wood putty.  I used Amy Howard Cartouche as the base, then Seashell by Vintage Market, then French Blue by Amy Howard.  The next step is a dark grey drybrushing. Then I sanded and waxed, first with clear, then dark wax.

How To Avoid White Painted Furniture Yellowing Over Time With General Finishes Paint Products – Christine Adams

Christine Adams

Wood Finishing Technical Writer at General Finishes

A TUTORIAL ON WATER BASED TOP COATS YELLOWING OVER BRIGHT WHITE PAINT

Many you may have noticed that the labels on our bright white paints, Snow White Milk Paint and Chalk White Chalk Style Paint now carry a warning label regarding the yellowing of topcoats. All bright white paint will yellow slightly with time, with or without topcoat. Water-based topcoat is reactive and more likely to draw out substances in the wood such as tannins or unknown substances in existing finishes causing the topcoat to yellow. This is an industry-wide issue. Don’t carry the cost of white paint yourself– pass the cost on to the consumer who wants it with a fair upcharge. White paints, even if they did not yellow, require more coats to achieve coverage.

General Finishes background was originally on the professional side, and the incidences of yellowing topcoat over white paint were almost nil, and when our sprayable professional finish, Enduro White Poly, is used, there have been no incidences. But as the use of our paints has increased in the up-cycling and furniture refresh markets, we have heard more reports of our topcoat yellowing. Our response was to teach about prepping, testing you finish schedule and finally creating Stain Blocker, our stain blocking primer, but this is not enough. Just as we advocate prepping all finishes, we are now advocating NOT using a clear water base topcoat over BRIGHT WHITE paint.

General Finishes is in the process of developing a brushable version of our professional Enduro White Poly (available only in gallons), but that will take some time and rigorous testing before we can release the product. Here is what you should know to protect yourself and also some immediate suggestions to decrease chances of yellowing.

There is no way to reliably predict yellowing ahead of time. Sometimes yellowing occurs, sometimes it does not. Every existing finish is different and we rarely know the finishing provenance on an existing piece. Every tree is different and every piece of wood is unique. Wood can bleed tannins immediately after the topcoat dries or months later with a change in temperature that comes with a change in seasons. Oak, pine, mahogany, and Douglass Fur are particularly prone to bleed-through.

As is true of most “water-white” topcoats, our High Performance Water-Based topcoat is a clear drying finish over a non-reactive substrate such as plastic. When paint is used over something as unpredictable as wood, all bets are off. Yellowing can be caused by the top coat activating the tannins in raw wood or aniline dyes, stains or contaminants in a pre-existing finish. This is most evident when using BRIGHT WHITE paint and most prevalent in the sculpted details of furniture, where the topcoat can collect, intensifying the color change to an unacceptable level.

To add to this issue, all bright white paint will yellow slightly with time, with or without topcoat. You have probably tried to touch up white woodwork in your home after several and noticed that the new paint is brighter.

Summary:

• Whites have a lower “hide” quality and are more transparent than most other colors. Most bright whites require additional coats to achieve the desired color and minimize color variation. This can increase cost of paint finishing. Always include a clause in your contracts addressing the need for additional coats to achieve coverage.

• Bright white paints can yellow over time with or without topcoat.

• The underlying finish or wood species can affect the final color of light paint.

• Details and inside corners are difficult to cover with any paint color, but this property tends to be more noticeable with whites. This is a naturally occurring phenomenon in paint application and does not necessarily constitute a defect in the paint finish or your technique.

TIPS FOR PROTECTING YOURSELF AND PREVENTING YELLOWING

1. Use a disclaimer in your contracts or recommend a softer white such as Antique White or Linen. Upcharge for the extra coats needed and ever guarantee a white finish over a piece that you cannot trace the provenance on. Here is a suggestion: Terms of Agreement and Warranties: ________ (Initials) I have been informed that more coats are required when painting with bright whites, reds, greens or yellow. I understand that white paint can yellow over time and that water based topcoats can occasionally react with the substrate or existing finish under white paints causing yellowing, even is a stain blocking primer is used.

2. If it is a low use project, use a premium white paint that is self-sealing and does not require a topcoat. A clear top coat is not required on our Milk Paint for increased durability, as it is a self-sealing, exterior rated coating with very high durability and performance properties. However, top coats provide a smoother surface that is easier to clean and boost durability for high use projects such as table tops and kitchen cabinets.

3. Get a spray gun and use a professional “white coat” such as our Enduro White Poly. It is a white paint with “increased topcoat properties”, is a stand-alone finish when 3 coats are applied and does not require sealing with a topcoat.

4. If you are still brushing, try adding 10-15% of the paint you are using to the first or second application of topcoat. The last layer of topcoat should not have paint in it, to maintain durability. We have had good reports of this technique from customers but have not tested in the lab over a long period of time.

5. Always test your project’s entire finishing schedule (from cleaning to topcoat) on an inside door or a more hidden area of the piece. This does not help if the yellowing occurs later but you will at least know if there is an immediate problem.

6. Always apply a stain blocking primer under white or light-colored paint such GF Stain Blocker or a shellac based primer. Always let any primer dry overnight. Some of the primers we have seen suggest a 3 hour dry time and that is not enough.

7. If you are working on period pieces such as a 1940’s serpentine mahogany desk which were often finished in stain containing aniline dyes that cast a pinkish bleed through under light paint, stay away from light colors. Not every piece of furniture is suitable for up-cycling with a light paint color. Pine, Mahogany, and furniture of the 1940’s and 50’s are a red flag.

8. Last, not all manufacturer’s topcoats are compatible with other finishes and may react with a color change. Always follow best practices by not rushing, and testing to your satisfaction first.

Hope this helps and wish us luck on our next paint endeavor- Chris

What Type of Paint Works Best For Painting Outdoor Furniture?

Painted Furniture Seen On Safavieh

French Painted Furniture – Safavieh

We have all come across wicker sets second hand that could use a new coat of paint, or a wooden patio set that has seen better days.  Why buy new, when you can fix up something vintage or used?

Here, we’ll provide recommendations for the best paint options out there for your outdoor furniture painting needs.

Consider bringing a swatch of your exterior house paint or that of your outdoor furniture fabric along with you when deciding on color choices.  With so many color choices available, it is nice to be able to get the exact shade of the hue you are working with, rather than just guessing.

Consider the theme of your surroundings– Equally important is the consideration of floral  colors that surround the furniture. What colors are in the natural landscape of flowers and other vegetation? Do you have a stone wall or patio? You want your outdoor furniture to blend nicely with the environment in which it sits, so consider the many elements of that environment when picking your paint color.

Paint when it is dry- Paint needs time to dry and will not adhere to surfaces that are not dry.  Don’t consider painting your project on a rainy day, but rather wait for a dry warm day.  If you plan on painting in the winter or the spring when it is cold, or rainy, move your furniture in the garage, and use a space heater to warm up the room.

Clean your furniture first- Paint won’t adhere very well to dirty or rough surfaces, so be sure to clean your furniture well before spraying or painting your furniture.

When working with left over paint, mix it in one container– Mixing multiple cans of the same color of paint into a larger container, such as a five-gallon bucket, will help ensure a uniform color is applied to your outdoor furniture collection.

One important thing to be aware of when considering the type of paint you’ll use on your outdoor furniture is that indoor and outdoor paints are different from each other. Moisture from the outdoors can cause paint to chip and peel so it is best to choose something formulated for the outdoors.

Enamel Paint

Enamel paint is resistant to peeling and is an example of the type of paint you want to buy for outdoor furniture.  As enamel paint dries, it tends to be harder.  This means that it is less impacted by moisture from rain, or snow.  Enamel paint is often oil-based, but you can also find water-based enamel paints.

All-Acrylic Paints – “100 percent acrylic latex” on the label is a paint that remains flexible, breathable, and colorfast far longer than paints made with vinyl resins or acrylic blends. It also adheres well to most surfaces allowing you to use it on wood, vinyl, metal, and masonry.

Water-Based vs. Oil-Based Water-based paints are flexible enough to expand and contract with the change of the weather.  In general, they are breathable, so they won’t trap moisture and crack or peel. Oil-based paints offer better adhesion and stain blocking, so they are better for chalky surfaces, stained surfaces, bleeding woods (tannin or sap) and metals that rust.

Krylon Paints

To make the process far easier, Good Housekeeping recommends the Krylon brand, which can be found at Ace Hardware or online at Amazon.

Krylon H20 Latex option is environmentally friendly, low-odor, and is water-based so it cleans up easily when you’re done!  The Fusion For Plastic® series allows you to spray paint plastic pieces without primer or prep.  The plastic series can also be used outdoors.

Sherwin Williams Duration Acrylic is self-priming, mildew-resistant, and is also resistant to blistering and peeling. PermaLast technology enables the paint to last far longer than other outdoor paints. There are also over 1,500 beautiful colors from which to choose.

Best Paints According To Consumer Reports Sherwin-Williams’ Duration, in satin and semigloss finishes, took the top rating in the rankings, and finished No. 2 in ratings of flat paints, behind California Paints’ Fres-Coat Velvet Flat according to Consumer Reports.  They say this brand still looks impressive after the equivalent of nine years.  Glidden’s Premium flat and satin paints are two of “several” finishes that performed almost as well for a markedly lower price. Instead of spending a bunch of money buying new outdoor furniture, consider just giving it a new coat of paint. You’ll save money and your furniture will look almost as good as new!

The-Finest-Outdoor-furniture

If you want to have a good time with people who are very important to you, in an ideal environment is a good place to start looking for comfortable furniture. Finding the best furniture that suits your outdoor place within your budget is not as challenging as its sounds. Below are some tips to help you get the idea.

1) Select Furniture That Is Practical:

When selecting furniture for your patio, one of the most important things to consider is the comfort.  Why spend thousands of dollars on a set that you don’t want to lounge in on your Sundays?  Furniture that comes with cushions is ideal for supreme comfort. Most importantly, working with furniture that fits your space.  You want look for furniture that is also practical for what you would be doing often.  Do you have BBQ’s?  A full size dining table with matching chairs would be perfect, rather than a sofa.  Rocking chairs also can be a really nice investment if you like to read your morning news outside.

2) Select Furniture You Are Attracted To:

Your outdoor patio furniture should be a reflection of your style.  Wooden furniture can always be painted to match the color scheme of your patio or architecture and design of your house. Consider the style of your landscape, and the overall design that you are attracted to.

3.  Choose A Great Looking Set Within Your Price Range:

Not everyone has several grand to blow on patio furniture.  Although, don’t be under the assumption that there is not great options for a small budget. If you are working within a budget, add to your collection overtime, by adding in complementing pieces such as all wood sets, or all metal sets.  This can allow you to update the pieces by buying new cushions, or simply painting your sets.

4. Choose The Materials Best Suited For Your Climate:

There is a wide variety of patio furniture available, which are made of different materials keeping different properties in mind. Here are some materials that you need to consider when buying patio furniture:

a) Wood

If you are looking for durable and maintenance free furniture for your patio than wood might not be the best option.  With wood furniture, sealing the wood, or re-painting needs to be done every few years.  Wood is one of the supreme choices for patio furniture.  It has a very high end appeal, and can look amazing as it ages outside with the elements.  Cedar and eucalyptus are the most popular types of woods. Working with the proper paints and wood seals will ensure your wooden pieces last longer.

b) Wrought iron

Wrought iron is most popular material which is used to make outdoor patio furniture. It is also the classic choice of furniture in France.  It is the strongest and reliable outdoor furniture material. Metal can be left in the sun, in the rain and in the snow, and it will always weather quite nicely over time.  Iron can be painted, but it looks quite terrific in it’s natural state.

c) Aluminum

Aluminum is considered to be reliable and durable because it is rust free. It is also lighter than wrought iron and wood. It is best for low maintenance and you can easily move as it is lighter than wrought iron and wood.

Here are several classy outdoor looks that you can get some ideas from for this spring and summer.

How to Achieve a Great Red Paint Finish

Jansen, 1950's Louis XV style Coffee Table L'Art De Vivre

Jansen, 1950’s Louis XV style Coffee Table L’Art De Vivre

How to Achieve a Great Red Paint Finish

A friend of mine painted her living room walls a true red color. She primed twice and painted 5 coats. The paint didn’t cover at all and you could see all the roller strokes. Even with the 5 coats, you can still see some lines and the color is uneven, like you can see where some coats are covered better than others. Is there a certain step she could have taken to prevent all this or did she just get low quality paint? She bought the primer from Canadian Tire and the paint is CIL Dulux. The wall had been painted already, it is an older home. She was originally told that the red she picked was such a true red that it wouldn’t just go over white walls. She is considering priming them over again with a white primer and starting over. Shouldn’t she get a tinted primer? Any insight into all this would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance……. Val

This comment was taken from Allexperts.com

Where most people go wrong with painting red is they end up working with the wrong sheen for their first coat of paint.  Working with a gloss or a semi gloss finish is sort of like working with a translucent glaze.

I learned this first hand when I picked up a glossy orange paint at my local Home Depot and proceeded to work with it as a base to a marble finish.   I ended up ditching the entire project as after 5 coats of orange, I could still see the original white color underneath the paint. Much like Val’s question all I could see is roller marks.

When working with shades of cranberry, plum, or rich fire reds, buy your paint in a flat finish for your first two coats of paint.  Using a coat of flat paint that contains no additional glosses will allow you to build up the color in two or layers with excellent coverage.

How to Achieve a Great Red Painted Furniture Finish.

Furniture is much different than walls, but the same techniques can be applied.  Be sure to sand your furniture first which will provide something for the paint to grip on to.  You can then use flat red as a base coat, which will allow you to sand through to expose the wood. In the past, if I needed to cover a piece of furniture that needed a heavy duty primer I would use Rustoleum’s Flat Black, or Brown.   Red can provide that pop of color in a neutral styled French room.  Use it on furniture for that dramatic look in a otherwise plain room.

5 Ways To Update Vintage French Provincial Furniture

French Chair With Raw Wood

French Provincial Carved Oak Linen Dining Chair

Vtg Link Taylor 12 Drawer French Provincial Dresser

So you bought a vintage set of French Provincial furniture, and it looks as though it hasn’t been touched for 40 years. Is it salvageable? The answer is yes, heck yes! We show you the best techniques to update this style of furniture that will make it look like several hundred dollars.

1. Strip Your Set and Go All Natural

Raw wood has always looked good, and has never looked better. Over the summer I took all the furniture in my basement and united the finishes by removing the paint. Most of all the furniture I had in this one room was all miss-matched sets, but interesting enough, they all had the exact same wood underneath. The sofas we bought came with a mahogany finish, but underneath they were pine. After removing the paint from 6 pieces, I had a fully united set. I could then introduce color with the slipcovers and the paint finish on the walls.

Inspiration- A Louis XV Limed Oak Chest- here

Instead of Using a non-toxic stripping agent to get rid of the old paint or stain is the greenest way to go. Products like Franmar’s Soy Gel Paint and Urethane Remover work well to remove all types of abrasive paint and stain , while still being gentle on the environment. This product is also 100 percent biodegradable. It works by trapping particles within itself and keeping you from being exposed to them.

Soy Gel Paint Reviews:

Garden Web“My current fave is Soy-Gel, which I got from the Real Milk Paint Co., though it can be ordered from the manufacturer and other suppliers. I added it to a recent order more out of curiosity, and without much hope. But holy smokes, it works like gang busters if left alone to do its thing. I haven’t done a big project with it yet, but I plan on stripping a pine floor. My test patches have been great! I have tried just about every chemical and mechanical method, and So far Soy-Gel is the best I’ve found.”

My Experience With Stippers:

After using many of the most popular strippers on the market and having very limited success, I decided to try out other methods, which lead me to Heat Guns.

After purchasing a Wagner Heat Gun for about $20 dollars, I was thrilled with the results. Not only did it work fast, it also saved me a great deal of money with chemical stripper. The heat gun I purchased has two settings, one high, and one low. After the heat gun starts heating up, you will notice the paint start to bubble, which you can scrape off with little effort. The best technique for removing paint is to slowly move the paint gun along the paint, for an even amount of heat in each section. Heat guns can also ruin wood if they are left on the wood too long, so you don’t want your heat gun positioned in one area for two long. The wood can turn dark, which can be impossible to sand out. While some suggest wood tools, instead of metal tools, I enjoy working with a multi purpose metal tool, such as this one from Shur-Line. Working with heat guns for stripping paint, it is imperative to buy a Respirator made for fumes. One of the draw backs of heating up the paint, is the fumes they produce, so a respirator is a must have when using this technique.

Products That Might Be Worth Trying:

– Wagner Power PaintEater – $59 Removes paint, ergonomic handle, and may be better than those attachments meant for your drill.

Electric Paint Remover Sold through Chicago $63

TruePower Electric Paint Remover-$39-

  • Removes paint, paint chips, paint oxides and mildew, and feather finishes paint edges.
  • Use on wood, masonite, concrete and steel
  • Will not abrade surfaces – Perfect for large, flat, solid surfaces

MUST Have- Safety Gear

Breathing in fumes from stripper, stain or paint can create heath problems that can effect your lungs long term. If you have a garage, workshop, or even a storage shed, working from within it will help contain any harmful dust or debris from being let out into your yard or the surrounding area. Purchase a heavy duty respirator designed for paint fumes. I am so glad to come across the MSA Safety works Paint and Pesticide Respirator because it is comfortable to wear for several hours straight, and it will save your lungs for today and long term.

2. Old World Patina – Paint Or Stain?

After centuries of trying to perfect our furniture, it comes at no surprise that many companies are selling the all natural chalk paint and milk paint products that our ancestors used. Milk and chalk paints can be a sensational source of color. If you are after an old world Provence look, consider either stripping your furniture and staining it, or painting it, and distressing it.

Take the Finish Off

I have found for my furniture, stripping the existing finishes off allows the piece to age naturally over time without seeing several layers of existing paint. I sit at a beautiful curvy French desk all day long, and one of the areas where my arm hits as I type on my keyboard shows the white paint that the desk was painted in originally. The desk is blue, and the white just sticks out like a sore thumb. If I would have put the extra work into the desk, and removed the paint, then over time, the natural ware would show the wood. Wood or existing paint? Wood is so much more attractive.

Distressing looks so much nicer with the natural raw wood. Something about having the all natural wood showing through the finish allows for a nicer aged finish than simply painting over the existing paint or varnish. Working with the raw wood really can go a long way for creating the old world distressed finishes. Stripping all the existing paint gives you a raw look, rather than working over a poly finish.

Layer Your Colors:

Layering paint can produce a sensational old world effect. Try several tones of blue, and combine it with a layer of white. Consider several layers of paint which you can then hand sand, adding the right amount of distressing. Layer on a translucent glaze, or wax to complete the look.

Work With Stain Finishes:

Consider doing a “wash” instead of a solid color. After removing your paint finish, consider mixing your paint with part water, and applying a stain. You can also buy semi transparent stains through your local hardware store. Using a beige, and then white stain would produce the aged old world looks that are so well loved.

Add Texture:

In this article we show a chest with beautiful texture on the drawers. A gray toned blue is used under a creamy white, with beautiful texture that shows off an old world paint finish. Adding texture can be easier than you think. Simply get a box of un-sanded grout. Paint your furniture using a base coat with NO grout added. Once it is dry, mix together a bit of grout with the existing paint. Next stipple on the finish with your paint brush and let it dry over night, or for two days. Once it is dry, lightly sand it, and add your top coat. Using the same technique, mix together half and half paint and un-sanded grout and paint on an even coat of paint. Using two colors like the picture shown in the article will produce the best results. For a subtle effect, consider using a creamy beige and white together. The colors don’t have to be opposites to work well. Once the dresser has dried over night, take a hand sander and start sanding the finish. The texture from the first coat will show through to the second coat. Add additional wax, or glaze to make the finish pop, or leave it as it is.

3. Go New And Modern With Color :

Do you like vibrant colors? The lines found in the French styled furniture can powerfully pull off the sensational bright colors. There are so many bright colors that I admire but don’t have the guts to put up on the walls, so why not put it on a piece of furniture.

Do you like the brighter colors, or the patterned printed chests? You might want to just buy spray paint for those high gloss mirrored finishes.

In the past I have hand painted gloss only to find paint lines from my brushes. With brighter red, or yellow, it can take up to 7 or 8 coats of paint, so spraying your paint just makes more sense. Often times the gloss you find in spray paint can be so much more vibrant and glossy than regular gloss paint in the quart size. Oil paint can produce sensational glossy finishes. Overall, I have found for those really glossy finishes, it is worth buying the spray paint, than hand painting. The coverage is faster, and the gloss is so much more vibrant and glass like.

Glossy finishes are best achieved with spray paint, and why not buy a case of your favorite color online? For some of my last couple projects, I have been really impressed with Krylon’s Paint and Primer sprays. I started looking online when my local hardware stores spray paint failed to impress me. Never do I see the lavenders, the soft grays, or light blues. The nicer colors are online, and many companies are starting to sell by the case.

4. Add Furniture Jewelry

Ormolu is the jewelry of the furniture trade. Antique and reproduction furniture ormolu can be found on ebay making it easier than ever to dress up that worn antique, or that vintage chest that is outdated.

Reproduction ormolu can be found in bronze, and there are sellers out there who also produce these beautiful appliques in stain-able wood filler. Being able to buy appliques in unlimited quantities allows you to dress up the chest of your dreams.

The high gloss looks found on bombe chests are often accented with heavy ormolu or furniture appliques.

Add Furniture Escutcheons

Dress up your chest with keyholes, or otherwise known as escutcheons. Buy a set of identical keyholes for each drawer of your chest. Keyholes can be gold leafed, or painted the same color as the chest. Consider dating your metal furniture appliques or keyholes with aging solutions. In this post ” 9 DIY Recipes For Rusty Hardware” From Hersite, you can get the look of aged hardware in your own home.

5. Pattern Your Furniture

Patterns can look so wonderful in a space lacking interest. There are several ways to get the look of a pattern on your chest, which range from complicated approaches to simple techniques.

One of the harder techniques would be hand painting furniture. For those who have the gifted talent of hand drawing, this may be a project that you can accomplish over a weekend. For those who don’t have the natural abilities of drawing, there are several other approaches that can give you a professional look without much try.

One of those ways is an overhead projector. An overhead projector may be your new best friend after seeing how simple it is to copy a design without much work than having a marker in your hand. With this chest, I simply photocopied a flower pattern from a cardboard box that I bought from Ikea. I had gold paint in one hand, and outlined the flower, and painted it in after I traced out the design. This zebra painted dresser was traced using an overhead projector, as well as this dresser. Overhead projectors allow you to trace a perfect, proportionate design right the first time. They also allow you to match up the existing pattern which has been already traced on to your furniture, allowing for even spacing for the next pattern. This also works quite nicely on walls. Take your favorite comic book, custom graphics from books and be able to re-produce them with ease.

French Provincial Painted Furniture- Thistle by Design Facebook

Not surprisingly to its fans, the French provincial-style furniture has become very popular of late, possibly as a reaction to the aggressively modern style that has dominated previously. Interior designer Bernadette Ferrari says she believes it will continue to be a popular trend as it combines elegance with functionality, according to FerrariInteriors.com.au.

This style of furniture is beautiful to look at without having to change anything at all, but it can become dingy over time, due to its inherent natural appearance. The French are well-known for their proclivity to paint furniture. Most often, this style uses white paint, which provides a fresh new look for outdated furniture, although other colors can be used. Painting is a great way to transform a piece of old furniture into something new with minimal expense.

You can add even more interest to almost any piece by using mouldings, painting details in another color, or adding gilt on the trims, as LilyFieldLife.com suggests.

While you could pay someone to paint your furniture for you, it’s a lot more fun to do it yourself. Save your money, and find a contractor to help in other aspects of a total room or home interior makeover.

Enjoy the opportunity to get creative by following these steps (with help from LilyFieldLife.com) toward painting your own French provincial-style furniture.

Cleaning

Before you begin, cover your work area with old white sheets or newspapers. Even the most meticulous painters make mistakes now and again. Next, clean the item you want to paint by wiping it down with a dusting brush or a moist cloth. Remove all of the dust, as painting over dust doesn’t mend well. As most French provincial style furniture is made of wood, you shouldn’t get it too wet, as this will cause the fibers of the wood to swell.

Unless you want to paint the hardware, removing it will make painting easier.

Sanding

If you find any cracks or holes in the piece while cleaning, use wood filler to fill them, and then sand to a smooth surface. Next, you should sand the piece all over very lightly. Be gentle, and remember– this type of furniture can be quite delicate. If it’s in generally good condition, you don’t need to completely remove the old finish. Rough it up just slightly to give the paint something to adhere to, and sand in the direction of the wood grain in order to avoid any noticeable swirl marks.

As many pieces of French provincial furniture have melamine tops, you can also sand this with a relatively fine sander, and apply a coat of flat white oil paint. As it is quite durable and has a flat sheen, this acts as a primer, according to Natty By Design.

Priming

You’ll need to prime the entire piece. This is especially important with old wooden furniture, as it can bleed through the paint. If this occurs, use two coats of primer and that will usually correct the issue. If you decide to go with a darker color, use a tinted primer.

Painting

Painting the piece can be accomplished using a spray, brush or a roller. A good quality paint brush generally creates the best look. Turn the item upside down, and paint hard-to-reach areas first, keeping an eye out for any drips or runs. These can be corrected by feathering your paint brush across them before they dry. They can be avoided by not putting too much paint on your brush.

You’ll need at least two coats of paint. Wait at least one day in-between them, or longer if possible. It needs to dry completely before painting the next coat. If you live in a humid location, it may take longer to dry.

Protection

A top coat should also be applied, especially if you’ve used acrylic paint. Polyurethane, sealers or furniture wax will work, although oil-based poly or sealer should not be used over white paint, as it will cause it to well.

Finally, you’ll need to wait at least three days, and preferably five, before placing any objects on your beautiful and newly painted piece of furniture in order to avoid scuffing.

How To Update Vintage French Provincial Furniture

French Provincial Furniture From Stiltskin Studios Esty

A Beautiful Light Pink French Provincial Furniture From Stiltskin Studios Esty

Vintage French furniture can be a terrific opportunity to getting the upscale French looks for less.  Vintage furniture can be found in most American and Canadian cities and for the most part they are affordable.  Many of these vintage sets can be transformed with paint, or even stripped of it’s varnish and re-stained a different color.   Vintage French furniture allows you the opportunity to experiment with finishes, textures, colors and distressing techniques, when the prices are reasonable.  There are so many possibilities with vintage French Provincial furniture.

Before you consider colors, decide whether your interior scheme is country style, or formal and elegant.  There are a number of ways to give these pieces a facelift, but truly most French styles fall into these two categories.

Ebay

1.  French City Styles

French furniture can have a polished look, as well as a country look.  Depending on the paint color choice, and the style of furniture, it can be painted to have a more sophisticated look, or looks that resemble furniture belonging to country homes.

My other site- French Style Authority features many of the upscale French looks that you might see in formal French interiors.  Some examples of the formal French looks, include extravagant marquetry chests, gilt wood chests and wall clocks, and upholstered furniture with rich silk fabrics.

How To Pull Off This Look…..

-Consider painting your furniture gray and white wash the frame with a creamy white.  Upholster your pieces with rich pastel upholstery in raw silk, or velvet.  Raw silk has some of the most saturated color choices around, and will surely give your pieces a high end look.  Satin is another choice to get that rich Marie Antoinette look for your home.  You can also shop for fabric online to help you reupholster your furniture yourself. Check out your favorite fabric shops online and get the materials shipped right to your home. You can either reupholster it yourself or hire a company to do it for you.

-Go for the more saturated colors.  This photo shows an exceptional emerald green and gilt wood combination.  Have custom marble or stone fit for your dresser, or buffet tops.  See this post “Decorating With Pastels” for more inspiration.  To make your dresser look richer, gold leaf the hardware, and add more hardware to the chest, such as furniture mounts and keyholes.

-While I can hardly compare this 75 thousand dollar vitrine to a 300 dollar French chest, you can certainly borrow some ideas for your own furniture.  Instead of painting your furniture, why not stain it?  Simply remove the finish with a heat gun, or paint stripper.  Consider faux finishing the raw furniture with lines that look like the expensive veneer woods.  (This would only work on the solid wood pieces) All that is needed is polystain, and a couple thin brushes.  Improve the look of your furniture by adding custom ormolu to the drawers, feet, and hammer on matching keyholes to a dresser or chest.  Gold leaf the hardware to create the look of a matching set.

– Color really makes a huge difference on these pieces.  Paint companies such as Annie Sloan, Darryl Carter For Benjamin Moore, and The Williamsburg Color Collection By Benjamin Moore are specially designed after the historical colors.  Having the just right color can make a tremendous difference in the overall appearance.

2.  French Country Styles

The country styles can have bold color as well, although you will find the finish and colors to be different.  Consider the color palette of the French countryside such as the purples, green and blues found in Frederic Mechiehe’s Provence Home In Hyeres, and yellows, seen in Tremolet’s Chateau d’Ailly in Normandy.

In this post, “5 Paint Color Choices For Provincial Furniture” I show a number of country colors that would work perfectly on painted chairs, desks, armoires, beds and chests.  Consider skipping the bright gold hardware for rusty pieces, or iron looking hardware.

– Don’t just paint your pieces one solid color and add hardware, and call it a day….  be sure to really highlight the curves and carvings.  This yellow armoire wouldn’t look the same without having the carved areas highlighted in white

5 Paint Color Choices For Provincial Furniture

Painting furniture can be an outstandingly satisfying craft. You can find an old, outdated piece and breathe new life into it with a simple color of paint. Once it’s in a new space, it can brighten and invigorate it, adding charm and drama all at the same time.

Sometimes the hardest decision of all is what color to use. When you want to go bold, here are some top color choices to consider.

Emerald Green

Emerald green is the hot color of 2013, according to the design industry. It connotes thoughts of riches and a recovering economy, and its lushness can bring a look of jewel luster into your home.

Because neutrals are still popular to decorate with, a splash of bright, bold, emerald green can be a lovely contrast against beiges and tans. Think about painting a chest or end table emerald green and adding some gold or silver accents or hardware. You’ll have a standout piece that will take charge.

Red

It seems red is a classic for painted furniture, one that can last through the years. Every room can hold a bold piece of red painted furniture, and the colors can range from candy apple to deep garnet. Like emerald green, a deep jewel tone will add drama, and a brighter red will add cheer.

Whether it’s a chair, table, or something else, a red accent piece of painted furniture will work well with almost any other color schemes, from neutral palettes to brighter colors ranging from blues to greens to yellows. Red can add freshness, drama, or whatever look you’re going for.

Blue

Colors of nature are very in right now, so painting a piece of furniture with the bold tones of blues in nature will be just the thing to do in 2013. Blue can be soothing like the sky, or invigorating like the sea. Choose from any blue shades to create a bold standout piece that will bring the natural world indoors.

Like red, blue tends to work well with most other color palettes and is a wonderful contrast to black and white.

Lavender

Whereas pink or purple may be too young to place in areas other than girl’s rooms in the home, lavender is like pink all grown-up. A single painted piece of lavender furniture will pop in a room and add that vintage drama that can bring the room to life.

Lavender is a great color to mix with other bold tones, like yellow and green, or use it against a white palette for extreme drama. Have fun with it – go bold – remember, it’s not a kid color anymore!

Yellow

Yellow is taking off on the runways now, so why not bring it in the home. A bold piece of yellow painted furniture, from chests to chairs to dining tables, will add a fresh new feel to any room.

Yellow can brighten darker areas and works great with natural woods or metallics. Don’t be afraid to go bold – lean towards the canaries, lemons, and golds rather than the softer butter and cream yellows.

Adding that piece of boldly painted furniture to your home will invigorate your home. Take a look around at what you have already; you never know, the very piece you want may already be in your home…just waiting.

10 Tips To Keeping Your French Furniture Looking New

French Bedroom- The World of Interiors Nov 2011

When it comes to expensive antique or vintage furniture, you want to keep your furniture in good shape for as long as you can.  Upholstery can get messed up fast, especially if you have kids. Their sticky fingers and accidental spills can leave your furniture looking beat up and grungy. However there are some ways to keep your furniture looking nice:

1.    Fix scratches – Scratches on wood can easily be fixed with something you probably already have. No it is not a chemical or stain. Instead rub the scratch with a walnut. Somehow the nut removes scratches faster and better than anything you can buy at the store.

Also consider getting Minwax wood finish stain marker to fix those small scratches on wood based furniture.

2.    Remove stains – Some stains seem impossible to remove, but have no fear. Almost every satin can come out if you have the right stuff. My first go to for stains is Oxyclean. Safe to use on almost all fabrics and carpets, this miraculous cleaner helps me to get out stains like blood, wine, and even grape juice. This works well for stains in the car also, so it is well worth investing in a bucket of the wonder powder.

– You would be surprised how well plain white soap works.  With a bit of water, and white soap, stains usually lift right away.

-If your upholstery starts to look dingy, or has developed stains and spots, before you do anything, it is important to vacuum it. This will lift the dirt up off the upholstery so that when you go to remove the stains with water, you won’t be grinding in dirt and dust which, when wet, can further dirty your couches and chairs.

– When a spill occurs, blot the spot, don’t scrub or rub.  Clean up the spill with a dry white cloth as quickly as possible to prevent the stain from spreading.  Blotting is perhaps the most crucial, and also common sense part of how to clean upholstery.

3.    Use Tablecloths –The best way to keep your dining room table looking new is to prevent accidents from happening in the first place. When kids are around try to keep delicate fabrics and woods covered. A thick tablecloth will help to keep your table shiny and new looking.  Exchanging out tablecloths will keep your kitchen and dining areas looking fresh.  Use white linen for special dinners and beige linen for every day use.

4.  Use Satin Wall Paint- This French interior walls are painted in a vibrant shade of red.  This living room, designed by Miles Redd, shows the red interior we all dream about.  Redd adds a feminine feel by using  pelmets around the window.  A red upholstered French chair brings this red room together.  Use Satin Paint which can be cleaned yearly, which can brighten up dull wall paint.  While flat wall paint is quite lovely to look at, it cannot be cleaned.  Satin has a bit of a sheen to it, allowing you to gently wipe down the walls year to year.

5. Use The Right Outdoor Paint.  Rich rattan furniture can be seen through out the French cafes.  Copy this style for your own patio, by updating it with a rich cherry red.  Outdoor paint is formulated differently than indoor paint and often extends the life of your furniture.  Many more additives are used in outdoor paint to keep the color rich through sun exposure, and rain and the winter season. Painting wicker furniture can take a lot of time, so it is important to use the right paint.  Using a paint sprayer that hooks up to a compressor will allow even coverage, as well as be able to paint all the areas the brush cannot get to. A sprayer will allow you to paint all 6 or 8 chairs in an afternoon.   Spending a bit more for the right paint will ensure your furniture will last for years without peeling, or loosing its color.

6. Save Your Paint For Touch Ups.  Over time, furniture will need touch ups.  Save your furniture paint for future re-painting.  From year to year, patio furniture will scratch or flake off.  Having the extra paint on hand will allow you to re-paint table tops or areas of the furniture which tend to scratch.  If you are thinking about adding an additional piece to your collection, your stored paint will save you time from matching paint and making another run to the hardware store.

7.  Invest In A High Quality Vacuum Cleaner– These old fashioned mattresses have become very popular with Zentique, Home Decorators Collection and Restoration Hardware.  Although this style presents a primitive look, you truly don’t want to keep mattresses exposed over time, as dust and dirt settles in quickly.  Mattresses are often not cleaned in most homes, yet we spend 8 hours on them in a day.  In this video, you can see how much dirt a Kirby Vacuum picks up off a clean-looking mattress.  Consider investing in a high quality vacuum cleaner that is of professional quality.  Kirby vacuums and Dyson Vacuums are considered the best vacuums on the market.  Check out both vacuums in this video.  Cleaning your mattresses, furniture, and carpets will extend their lives restore the air quality in your home.

8. Invest In Slip Covers- Joni from Cote De Texas wrote an excellent article listing  the top 6 must haves for the year, and slipcovers was one of them.  Slipcovers are the covers that protect the furniture from dust and stain. They can be removed and are easy to wash and clean.

Slipcovers also allow you to exchange out one pattern for another.  Perhaps having two slipcover sets – one for the winter and another for the summer.

9.  Use Slipcovers For Your Dining Chairs- Your kitchen or dining table is used regularly, so consider making or purchasing slip covers for your chairs.  Chair seat covers come in a variety of styles that fit with any décor. Even couches can have a blanket tossed over them to prevent sticky hands from ruining it. While a blanket can be tossed into the washing machine, a couch can’t. By taking precautions you can keep your furniture looking brand new.

 10.  Keep Your Furniture Out Of The Sunlight.- If you have a choice in upholstery, consider upholstering the backs of your french chairs in a different fabric if they sit near a window with sun exposure.  Over time the fabric which has been exposed will fade in color.  Having the front upholstery different than the back will allow the back to fade naturally, without the front looking quite a bit different.

Light is important, and you don’t want to have to close your curtains just to preserve the furniture.  Slipcovers can also allow you to exchange out linens over time, giving you fresh prints and fabrics to change up your home through the seasons.

These are just a few of the ways that you can preserve and protect your furniture. From antiques to words of modern art and design, it is much easier to prevent then it is to repair. So be alert to dangers and do not be afraid to cover up delicate pieces.
