Buffets were commonly used as extra pieces of furniture to store food on.  Think back to the days when wall cabinetry didn't exist and the need for furniture to store things was an absolute must.  Buffets were very practical then, and today they are often used to store extra china and kitchen wares.  In recent years the antique buffet also is the perfect choice for flat screen tvs in the family room.  If it works, go for it.  Buying antique or vintage furniture makes sense in compared to the low quality that is produced today.
