Hi Michelle,

I adore the French Provence style, but I am afraid I am not an expert on the subject. Many companies in the 50's- 70's produced countless lines of French Provincial furniture, that it is impossible to know information on all the companies out there that produced them. Some companies produced really high end looking quality lines with solid wood furniture, and there was also companies who produced looks that were made of low grade quality materials. With any sort of furniture, consider buying something made of solid wood. To determine if your piece is made of quality, take the drawers out, and look how they finish the frame of the inside of the dresser. I have dressers where the inside is of cardboard, and it suits me just fine for the room it is in. If you are looking for the worth of your set, I would go onto ebay and keep an eye what sets that look similar are priced at.

French furniture comprises both the most sophisticated furniture made in for king and court aristocrats and rich upper bourgeoisie on the one hand and made in the provincial cities and towns many of which like and retained cultural identities distinct from the metropolis. There was also a conservative artisanal rural tradition of French country furniture which remained unbroken until the advent of the railroads in the mid-nineteenth century.

Hello-I have loved looking at all the beautiful furnitures pieces you have done. I have no experience at painting furniture but have a french provincial bedroom suite from the 1970's that I want to apint for my daughter. Ivory w/the gold trim. I want to paint it an ivory color close to the original. Do you think I will need sand & use a primer? Considering the age of the furniture, it is in excellent condition, smooth surfaces with no deeps scrathces or knicks. Any advice is appreciated!

French Provincial nightstands could go up to 100 dollars per nightstand, depending on the quality and the area of the country. My best advice is to look on craigslist or ebay and see comparable pricings.

<a href="http://findouthowtomakemoneyontheinternet.com/how-to-make-a-full-time-paycheck-selling-on-craigslist" rel="nofollow">Here is a great article </a>for selling your french provincial furniture on the internet

I have sold lots of Dixie furniture. I would say it is pretty good quality. Every line is different. I suppose it depends on what you are hoping to do with the set.

Hi Karen

My trick to painting black furniture is just to sand quite well before painting, this way it limits the use of primer. Do try Behr's Paint and Primer, as you now can get unlimited colors in a primer, where as in the past you could only get white and gray. This then opens up the opportunity to distress your furniture. Meranda

Hello, I love what you are doing and what a great blog. Very inspirational! I am new to the furniture refinishing and I am very sensitive to odors and for that reason I would prefer to use latex paint, do you have any you would recommend? I have a few projects on the shelf and would like to have confidence doing them. Also, I am wondering if you ever use primer or if your suggestion is only about when using black paint? I have found the guys at the stores recommend primer highly. However, I would like to hear what you recommend since you are already doing this work and have the tried and true experience. thank you for sharing your knowledge with us!

Yes~ Oil paint or Lacquer paint are both excellent choices to apply over Formica. Lacquer paint is often used on cars so it is extremely durable. I tend to use oil paint on my pieces because it doesn't chip and holds up much better compared to water based paints. I usually tend to sand the formica before I paint it so that the paint has something to grab on to.

The dealers name is under the picture. I found them on ebay. I am sure they are no longer on ebay, as it was several months ago. Though the beauty of french provincial furniture is that there was so many different designs that were made. They made me drool as well!

I am sorry Laura, I cannot remember which colors I used. I plan on doing another, but this time, I will remember to write down what paint colors I will use. The nextg time around I am going to try darker colors instead of the brighter colors. Also, I plan on using a fairly flat finish so I could add a brown glaze on top. The union jack dresser was my first, and it turned out very nice.

I am looking for a double headboard (and footboard if possible) to match my old bedroom set....it seems to be the Dixie set judging by the pictures, it was bought at Sears in the 70s. Do you know my best bet in finding one that can be shipped to Canada? Or who sells a more modern make of something that would blend in with what we've got?
Thanks

I came across your blog and was drooling at all of the beautiful pieces of furniture that you've done...outstanding!!

I just purchased a french provincial bedroom set for my little girl off of craigslist with the intention of painting it an antique white for her bedroom. I had not ever seen the hardware painted the same color as the wood and it looks FANTASTIC!! Can you tell me how to paint the brass so that it will not come off? Also, would you suggest spray painting the furniture and if so, what brand/type would you recommend. Any help you can give me would be sooo appreciated as I've only painted a few pieces of furniture in my day.
